Dating as a single parent: what to know
Having children doesn't take you off the market. It just means you date with more wisdom. Here's how to do it well.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
Single parents often wonder if anyone will want a ready-made family. The truth is, many people do. Plenty of serious, mature singles see a good parent as a sign of a good partner.
Be upfront
Mention your children in your profile. The right person will appreciate your honesty, and you'll avoid wasting time with anyone who isn't open to it.
Take your time before introductions
Your children don't need to meet everyone you date. Wait until the relationship is serious and steady. Then start with short, relaxed meetings.
Watch how they talk about your kids
Do they ask about them by name? Are they patient when plans change because a child is sick? Those small moments show you how they would fit into your family.
Keep your co-parenting peace
If you share custody, be clear with a new partner about how that works. A healthy partner respects the other parent's role, even if things were difficult.
Make time for yourself
Dating while parenting is tiring. Short coffee dates during school hours or video calls after bedtime still count. You deserve love too.
