Faith and dating: how to talk about what you believe
If faith matters to you, it should come up early. Here's how to have that conversation without making it a test.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
For many Africans at home and abroad, faith shapes everything: how we spend Sundays, how we raise children, what marriage means. Yet a lot of people avoid the topic until it becomes a problem.
Know what matters to you
Do you need a partner from your church or denomination? Or someone who simply shares your values? Be honest with yourself before you ask anything of others.
Ask open questions
Instead of "Are you a Christian?", try "What role does faith play in your life?" You'll learn much more from the answer.
Listen to the daily picture
Someone may call themselves religious but never pray or attend. Someone else may be quiet about faith but live it every day. Look at how they actually live.
Talk about the future
Where would you worship as a family? How would you raise your children? If you come from different faiths, these questions matter even more.
Shared faith can be a strong foundation. Talk about it with curiosity and respect, and you'll know early whether you're building on the same ground.
