First date ideas that actually let you talk
Loud clubs and long movies make first dates harder. Try these instead.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
The goal of a first date is simple: find out if you enjoy each other's company and want a second date. That means you need to be able to talk. Here are ideas that make that easy.
Coffee or tea, with a time limit
It's classic because it works. It's low pressure, inexpensive and easy to leave after an hour if there's no spark, or to extend into a walk if there is.
A walk somewhere beautiful
A park, a riverside, a botanical garden. Walking side by side makes conversation feel natural, and silence is less awkward.
Try a new restaurant from back home
Pick a Ghanaian, Nigerian, Ethiopian or Senegalese spot neither of you has tried. Food from home starts stories about family, childhood and the things you miss.
A cooking class or market visit
Doing something together shows you how someone handles a little challenge. Do they laugh at mistakes? Are they patient? You'll learn a lot.
Visit a museum or gallery
Art gives you endless things to talk about, and you'll hear how they see the world.
Video date first, if you're far apart
Before you travel, do a proper video date. Dress up a little, make dinner at the same time, and talk for an hour. It's a great way to see if the connection is real.
Stay safe
Meet in a public place, arrange your own transport, and tell a friend where you'll be. On AfroDuo, you can use Date check-in to share your plans with someone you trust.
Keep the first date short and sweet. Leave both of you wanting a second one.
AfroDuo is a dating app for Africans at home and across the diaspora who want serious relationships. Every member verifies their ID, so the people you meet are real.
