Meeting your online match in person: a safety checklist
The first in-person meeting should feel exciting, not risky. Use this checklist.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
You've talked, you've video called, and now you want to meet. Here's how to make that first meeting safe.
- Meet in a busy public place like a restaurant, café or mall. Never at a home for the first date.
- Get there on your own. Drive yourself or take a ride you booked. Keep control of how you leave.
- Tell someone your plans. Share who, where and when. AfroDuo's Date check-in can do this for you.
- Keep your phone charged.
- Watch your drink. Don't leave it alone.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
- Don't share your home address yet. That can wait until you know them well.
Most people you meet will be exactly who they said they are. These habits just make sure you stay in control.
