7 green flags that someone is ready for marriage
Chemistry is easy to spot. Readiness takes a closer look. Here are seven signs the person you're talking to is serious about building a life.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
Plenty of people say they want marriage. Fewer are ready for it. After years of coaching singles and couples, I've noticed the difference usually shows up in small, everyday things long before anyone talks about rings.
1. They talk about the future with details
"Someday" is not a plan. A person who is ready can tell you where they hope to live, how they think about money, and what kind of home they want to build. They don't need every answer, but they've clearly thought about it.
2. Their words and their schedule agree
If they say you matter, it shows up in their time. They call when they say they will. They plan the date instead of waiting for you to do it. Consistency is one of the most underrated signs of maturity.
3. They can handle a disagreement
Every couple argues. What matters is how. Watch what happens the first time you disagree. Do they listen, stay calm and come back to fix it? Or do they go silent for three days? The way someone fights is a preview of your marriage.
4. They're honest about their past
Ready people don't hide a divorce, a child or a big money mistake until month six. They share it at the right time, without drama, because they've made peace with it.
5. They have a life, not just a relationship goal
Someone who is ready brings something to the table: work they care about, friends, faith, goals. Marriage adds to their life. It isn't meant to rescue it.
6. Family and faith come up naturally
For many of us, marriage joins two families. A person who is serious will ask about yours and talk about theirs. If faith matters to you, they'll discuss it openly instead of avoiding it.
7. They want to know you, not just impress you
Early dating can feel like a performance. Ready people move past that quickly. They ask real questions, remember your answers and care about who you are when nobody is watching.
No one shows all seven perfectly. But if you see most of them, you may be talking to someone who wants the same thing you do. Pay attention, take your time, and let their actions lead.
