Long-distance love between Africa and the diaspora: how to make it work
Accra to Atlanta. Lagos to London. Long distance can work if you build it on purpose. Here's how.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
Many of us live with one foot in two places. Our families are back home, our work is abroad, and sometimes the person we connect with most lives an ocean away. Long distance is hard, but I've seen many couples make it work. The ones who do it well have a few things in common.
Agree on where it's going
Distance with no end date wears people down. You don't need a wedding date in month two, but you do need an honest talk early: who might move, roughly when, and what each of you would need to make that real. Visas, careers and family all matter here, so discuss them openly.
Build a rhythm
Time zones can quietly ruin a relationship. Pick regular times that work for both of you, like a morning voice note and a video call on Sunday evenings. Predictable contact builds trust more than constant texting.
Video, not just text
Text hides tone. Voice and video show you who someone really is: how they laugh, how they handle a bad day, whether they look you in the eye. If someone always avoids video, take that seriously.
Meet in person sooner than later
Months of chatting can create a version of someone in your head that isn't real. Plan a first visit within a reasonable time, meet in a public place, and tell family or friends where you'll be. The visit will tell you more than a hundred calls.
Bring family in wisely
In our cultures, family often joins the relationship early. That can be a blessing. Let people who love you meet your partner on video, and listen to what they notice. Just make sure the decision stays between the two of you.
Protect your peace and your money
A real partner will never pressure you to send money before you've met. Keep your finances separate until you're truly building together.
Long distance is not a lesser love. It just asks you to be more intentional. If you both show up, plan and stay honest, an ocean is just a distance.
