The money talk every couple should have before marriage
Money fights break more marriages than almost anything else. Have this conversation early, while it's still easy.
By Coach KJ Mensah, founder of AfroDuo and relationship coach
Most couples talk about children, faith and where to live before marriage. Fewer talk honestly about money, and that silence costs them later. Money is rarely just about money. It's about security, family duty and how you were raised.
Start with your stories
Ask each other how money worked in the homes you grew up in. Was it tight? Was it a secret? Did one parent control everything? Your habits today usually come from there.
Put the numbers on the table
Income, savings, debts and credit. Not to judge, but so nobody is surprised later. Hidden debt discovered after the wedding feels like betrayal, even when it wasn't meant that way.
Talk about family support
For many of us, sending money home is part of life. School fees for a nephew, a parent's medical bills, a building project in the village. Agree on how much, how often, and how you'll decide together when an emergency comes.
Decide how you'll run the household
Joint account, separate accounts, or both? There's no single right answer. What matters is that you both understand the plan and feel it's fair.
Share your goals
A house, a business, children's education, retiring back home. When your goals line up, saving feels like teamwork instead of sacrifice.
This talk can feel awkward. Do it anyway. A couple who can talk calmly about money can talk about almost anything.
